Dr. Matt Balazik captures an Atlantic sturgeon for monitoring purposes, which includes clipping a tiny part of its fin for DNA analysis. The fish is released back into the James River.

Dr. Matt Balazik, Ph.D., a member of VCU Rice Rivers Center's research faculty, recently  collaborated with researchers from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.  Their work is highlighted in The Washington Post guest column, "An ancient fish is in danger, but research could salvage its future."
